Berry on interracial romance: I have not abandoned [blacks]
Having been married and divorced to two Black men in the past, many people wonder why in recent years Actress Halle Berry has been dating men outside her race. She has been in interracial relationships with her ex and the father of her child, Gabriel Aubry, and currently she is dating a French/Spanish man, Oliver Martinez. Does this mean she has written off Black men from her men-to-date list?
In the March issue of Ebony magazine, Berry says she doesn’t particularly look for color when looking for men she wants to be with. "I look for the soul, the person, the evolution, what he believes in, who [he is as a person] and how does it affect me in a positive way." She also makes it clear that she hasn’t ditched the black community by dating interracially.
Find your soulmate on AfroRomance
"I have never been more clear about who I am as a black woman...the people I have dated sort of hold up a mirror to me and help me realize more of who I really am… And who I really am is a black woman who is struggling to make my race proud of me, who is struggling to move black women forward in the profession I've chosen, and those relationships have actually helped me identify myself more clearly. Not to say that I wasn't able to do that when I was married to two black men, but it certainly hasn't detracted from feeling very connected to my community, and who I really am at my core."
Born of a White mother and Black father, Berry tells Ebony she chose to identify herself as Black based on how the world identified her. So what about the racial identity of her daughter Nahla whose father (her ex boyfriend Aubry) is White and French Canadian?
Berry feels her daughter is Black because she is her mother and she is Black. Plus she also believes in the 'one-drop theory' - which refers to Jim Crow laws passed in the South during the 20th century that generally forbade any person with "one drop" of Black blood to pass as White. But that is just a feeling. All Berry wants is for her daughter to decide her identity for herself – just as she had to. "I had to decide for myself, and that's what she's going to have to decide — how she identifies herself in the world. And I think, largely, that will be based on how the world identifies her. That's how I identified myself."
In a country that is becoming more multi-ethnic, Berry's remarks on the issue highly emphasize the ongoing heated debate about racial identity. She acknowledges the unique challenges of being mixed race and "embracing all of who you are but still finding a way to identify yourself." She explains: "I identify as a black woman, but I've always had to embrace my mother and the white side of who I am, too. By choosing, I've often [wondered], "Well, would that make her feel like I'm invalidating her by choosing to identify more with the black side of myself?'"
What do you think?

@ patti43 - thanks alot, it comes with the territory! @ Empress26 - I agree with one thing you said and that is, if society see's you as blk then you're blk. I once heard someone say, "you are what you have to defend"! When you walk down the street outside of your community and people see you with your husband and kids and wht folks look at you as if you're trash and blks look at you as if you've taken something that belongs to them because they look at the color of your skin not knowing that the same blk blood runs through your veins as theirs. When you're around wht folks and they start dogging blk people because they think they're in the prescence of only wht people and you step in to check their behinds because you know they're talking about you, your husband, your babies and your father, having very light or almost wht skin don't shield you from those blows. Try getting a job and being called to HR because they assume you made a mistake on your ethnic indentification paper work because you checked afro/am instead of mixed, wht or hispanic only to be told that falsifying infomation could lead to termination and you got to argue with these crazy folks about who you are, it crazy as hell! I believe life would be alot easier for my cousin if she choose to pass like so many wht-looking blks did and still do but she doesn't feel she has to deny her blk heritage and she's strong enough to go through all the B.S. she has to go through to be real to herself and who she is without compromising. As far as my trying to sound educated, well I wont jump into the box you think I should fit in to please you are anyone else, that just wouldn't be REAL! I believe in love and all that it brings but if I have to live a lie for the sake of love maybe thats a love I don' need but most important it's a love I don't want! Best wishes sister!

I appreciate the opportunity to be on a site that is dedicated to uniting people who look beyond the cloth a physical body is wrapped in. It's sad that in the 21st century people still engage in this type of rhetoric. Does it really matter anyway? At the end of life the physical body will decompose and return to earth either as ashes to ashes or dust to dust. We are all made in the image of God. God is Spirit, God is peace and God is love! We are on this earth to glorify God in spirit and in truth. God is all there is! We are all spiritual beings having human experiences. Celebrate life!

@Kissime yes my dear we all are entitled to our opinions and yes common sense is a gift not all no how to use it. Am just saying Halle may have white genes yes but that don’t change the fact that she’s a black woman. Yeah yeah she’s light brown in color so am i does that mean am white cuz i have white genes flowing through my veins? In saying i would then again say this there ain’t no way in hell Halle is a white woman society can see her as they may and want. Now you can have other genes flowing through your blood at the end of the day only one counts that is to define you as you are you have a good weekend ahead Kissime. @Noplayer you are talking trash, you said that your cousin looks just like Brooke Shield are you forgetting that Brooke Shield is white? so please do tell me if your cousin is an look alike to Shields she is white an not black. If you want to say that the father determines the blood line your so wrong because not in every case this is true. My father is a black man my mother have Scottish and Portuguese blood flowing through her veins her hair is straight and long and i took nothing after my dad.Genes wise my mother is stronger so my mother determines my blood line. Do you think at the end of the day if she was to get in trouble with the law or if halle were to get in trouble with the law they going to be looking for a bloodline? no they are gonna be called as they are black women committing a crime and if you were to put your look alike Broke Shield cousin with two black person such as myself and Kissime walking down the street one day and we committed a crime together or witness an act of crime they are not going to say three black ladies they going to say two black ladies and one white which would be your look a like Brooke Shield cousin. Don’t matter how we all want to see it we all have all ready been branded in life with difference in color and religion. Let me guess your look alike cousin Passport says what that shes a black female or white female? huh…stewpsss i don’t care if her dad is black i don’t care if she run with the black wolf pack she is white cause her skin tone says it all.Now stop trying to sound educated with your Biological theory our genes play an important factor in our lives but at the end of the day.It don’t matter if we had white mother or white farther with one parent being black as long as you born with your pigmentation dark, you can called your self ebony, chocolate, fair skin, brown, light skin whatever your still black. Let me see biology change that. Halle has a choice in choosing her men them now if she love them white it’s all good if she love them black it’s all good if she want an Indian or Chinese any other race it’s all good and her darn business. I don’t get why anyone would take a pic of her with a white guy and make it an issue. Love is always great and beyond many things it conquers everything and true love comes in many forms and size you cant tell your heart who to love. Like or Dislike: 0 0 (0)

@NOPLAYER. Isn't mind- boggling that when you, as a Black man, are intelligent and speaking of things that maybe some people don't comprehend, you think you're better educated, have a" bigger brain", or are trying to prove something? Some people are fast with negative comments because of their lack of knowledge and that is serious. Where props are due, they're due and I give you yours NOPLAYER.

I think Halle understands what many of us have yet to understand and that's no matter how much people push this multi-ethnic rhetoric things will remain blk and wht in this country particullary when it come to economic, social and politic power. I think many have taken up this multi-ethnic / multi-cultural crap and ran with it, without fully taking the time to define these terms. Words are important and when people start to use words they use them to either shape opinion, push an agenda, enlighten or deceivepeople. So if they say we're moving towards a multi-cultural society you have to ask what does that mean, is it a bunch of people living in close proximity, people working together for a common goal or people embracing a common idea of community, what is this multi- cultural / ethic bussiness all about? Later for all of this romanticism and fantasy land day dreaming, what does reality say? Reality and the facts say we're more segregated now than we were when Dr. King made his famous "I Have A Dream Speech". They say 9am on Sunday morning is the most segregated hour in America. Was Jew town in Chicago multi-cultural, what about Little Italy, Chinatown, Little Havana and Little Arabia in Deerborn are the businesses and the economies in these places multi-cultural? Why are they pushing this multi-culturalism when the society is becoming Balkanized as we speak? How can blk folks of all people get caught up in this game, we've always been multi-cultural, we've embraced everybody thats come amongst us socially and economicaly til the point of straving our own communities and we eat eveybody's ethnic food, so it looks like we're very multi-cultural so why push this down our throats. It's political 3 Card Molly and we're getting taking for the ride. Those in power see the Balkanizing of America (everybody's going for self) and they don't want Blks and Latino to give into this because we're the 2 largest non-wht ethnic groups in America and it would really distrub the peace, so what better way to ward this off than by trying to get people to adopt this color blind and raceless society orientation when those that have benefitted from their ethnocentricism in every respect for over 300 years now see a threat to their power! They've sold people this idea of "e pluribus unum" (out of one many) knowing THE ONE always plans on controling and dominating over THE MANY but now the many is starting to give up on this scam and see things for what they are, now they're trying to put a stop to it by pushing this false ideology of multi-cultural / ethnocism. Once again we're back to the words, look at the intentionality behind the words and you'll be surprised at their true motives. Now that I think about it, aint no other ethnic group had little or anything to say about what Halle indentifies her as but blk folks, now what does that say about some of us? What I respect most about Halle is despite the fame and furtune she was not been duped into believing that the world has become color blind. She knows she belongs to the human race she but she doesn't feel that to embrace one is to reject all! That's one BEAUTIFUL and INTELLIGENT BLACKWOMAN! Peace be with you!

I think that it is stupid that Halle had to reassure blacks that she hasn't abandoned them. Aren't there more important things to talk about than who dates/prefers who among American blacks? It's HER business who she dates, not ours. Some folks are very insecure. It's quite pathetic, really.

Think: Does it really matter? Why are we even trying to come up with solutions and reasoning for this? There's no such thing as White or Black. Just a rainbow. Our "colors" don't define who we are. We ourselves do. My family has a very diverse, multi-cultural background. We don't even recognize color. Halle Berry, is who she wants to be. Let her be. Eartha Kitt didn't identify with any race. So what. Neither do I. But, does that make me wrong for selecting mixed as my ethnicity? That's up to you to decide. We are who we are. No one should come under fire for being who they want to be. Just because you don't agree, doesn't make them wrong, or for that matter, right. When you attempt to come up with this reasoning, you find yourself brandishing a double-edged sword. You're not going to cut someone else with out cutting yourself. 99% of the time, you'll end up putting your foot in your mouth. Drop the debate. It's pointless. Everyone who has commented on this seems, for the most part, educated. Don't waste your intelligence on this. I'm a product of love, not a Black and White union. I truly identify with neither. So, what race do I belong to? The Human Race. :) Peace, Unity, Respect, Love, and Hope to All.

I can't see why color has to have anything to do with who we are or how we get along with each other in the world. I am completely white, having had a white mother and a white father. I grew up where there was a lot of prejudice, but I am not. I was married to a black woman (6 years), and my family all put me down for it. Some of them still do, even though we have been divorced for thirty years. I live in a different city now, and I don't give a damn what they say. I only date black women now. But, I am treated better by black people than by white. To me, black is just a color. We all have red blood, and if we need a transfusion, who knows where that blood came from. There are lots of people running around with the blood from a different race in them. So, my point is, who cares what color our skin is.

But i'm sorry, Action Speak Is Louder Than Voices!!! WHAT IS UR SURNAME? is ur surname ur mother's name because she carried u on her womb for nine mons and pass through undescribeable pain to deliverd u? or ur surname is ur father's name becos God has made Man the Head of the Family not the tail of the Family? I didn't give anyone the power to classify anybody. I only wrote my point of view. If u a man disapprove what i wrote on my previous comment, then there must be something wrong with u somewhere. You are talking about SEEDS talking about EGG. Let me tell u something very important, No the Doctor or Scientist have ever discover how a baby do get into a womans womb. @ Edna - I never said that God didn't make man head of the household, I stated that some societies trace their lineage through the female. I know in the Jeudeo / Christain and Islamic spheres they trace the family through the male's side but everybody on earth does not follow those beliefs and as a result they may trace their bloodlines through the female. Everbody may not believe as you do and that doesn't make them wrong or you right, so no harm / no foul! I'm not trying to prove nothing but my original point! Now your original point was based on YOUR OPINION and not facts, you went off into what wht folks say and what blk folks say and who so-called mixed people ID with and I asked who gave them or us the right to classify people as either or other? I was only quoting what science and genetics state, so attack them and not me. You can hit the books and verify what I based my original point off of but I cant say the same for your points. Edna it's not that serious ok. I thought I was giving women their props but oh well!

@ Edna who gave people the power to classify what other people are, so what if Europeans started this business of classifying people, who the hell are they and who gave them the divine authority to do so? In some societies the lineage is traced throught the mother's and some of our accient African societies traced the bloodline through the mother. They had the wisdom to know that a seed without the earth (woman) to accept it, hold it, nurture it and bring it forth it would die. They understood that while the man's seed was needed to unite with the female's egg, the devine function and role of the female in her ability to fashion and nurture that potential life made her that much more worthy of honor and respect so that's why many societies still trace their lineage through the mother, because she's that much greater! Peace!

@ Empress26 - If you take the aurgement that the father determines the bloodline then she's blk, her wht mother had no blk or so-called colored genes to contribute, so whatelse is she but blk? My original statement was and is wht is not a color, it's the absence of color, I'm talking genetically, not nationality or ethnicity because niether of those or biological in nature. If a WM fathers a child with a BW he still has no color to add to the genetic pool so that child would not be wht, now could the father pass on other genetic or physical characteristic such as height, hair texture, eye color, atheletic abilities or other talents, yes because those factors are present is the genes but melanin which contributes to blk or so-called colored pigmentation is not present in wht genes, so there's nothing to pass on to make the child mixed so-called color wise! I'm staying away from color politics and dealing with genetics, there's too much emotion behind skin color and despite the emotions behind it you have to deal with the facts as we presently know them and the scientist agree that wht genes are recessive and they can only reproduce other recessive gene, so 2 wht people could only reproduce themselves, while 2 very dark skinned blks could produce a wht looking child. Blk genes are dominate and you can get recessive genes from dominate genes but not the other way around. This is the point I base my statement on.

@ No Player, now your cousin who you said can pass for Brooke Shields sister as much as she can hang with the black people talk like the black people dress like the black people even live in there neighbor hoods that aint mean she is black . She maybe wanna be black but she aint black. I have white friends who goes to the black clubs with me chill with me hang around black people that it make them black do they. @ kissime I dont get what the fuss is about so what if Halle claims she is black for crying out lord she is a black woman she is born from a white woman but that dont mean she took all her moms genes. My mom dad is white blue eyes and her mom is black, looking at my mom she is not white she is fair in color but she aint white she is black. Halle is a black woman you dont be see or hearing she be on the covers of magazines for one of the sexiest white woman alive no so is black. Halle is black she aint pretending to be black. Not everyone who has a white mother or black father, or vice versa means that they going to be all white or all black cuz i am living proof of that.

Not responding to previous answers, but the child is neither Caucasian nor negro (this is a proper ethnic term, and we are speaking properly here). Historically, the Spanish developed a language for dealing with mixed racial types they encountered while conquering the New World. A child by this language would be Mulatto (rooted in Spanish, Portuguese, Latin and Arabic) and literally means mixed. Likewise, a child with one "all" white, or "all" black parent, and mulatto parent would be a quadroon (rooted in Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin), and literally means quarter, and so on. This form of discriminatory thinking is referred to as colorism. It persists simply because people are not aware that they have better to do with their time than slap labels on people. When you get down to the root of the matter, what is the point? These types of questions always end up in argument; everyone has an opinion. Unfortunately most opinions are wrong to some extent. Some more, some less than others. --EDNA is totally correct. Bloodlines run in the father. The nationality of the father is "SUPPOSED" to be the nationality of the child. Now for a little humor: My parent's birth certificate reads their nationality as "COLORED." Mine reads "NEGRO." Research of my DAD's family's name states that my nationality is IRISH. In today's society we now have a box to state we are African American, prior to that, Black and prior to that Afro-American(afro is a hairstyle) . So, I should have a box that states I am a Colored Negro Irish Black Afro-African American. Who cares: THE BLOOD which flows thru ALL HUMANS is BLUE until exposed to OXYGEN and then it turns RED.

God is the Author of Life. And human beings have saparated us by race. The Bible shows God is aware of life in the womb, even before conception. Nevertheless, medical aspects believes individual life begins with conception by the union of the couple's sex cells or gametes. The 23 chromosomes of the paternal sperm (male pronucleus) fuses with the 23 chromosomes of the maternal oocyte (egg or female pronucleus) at fertilization to create a single cell embryo or zygote containing 46 chromosomes. So, base on this study, life begins when the sperm and the ovum are united. Sperm & egg are needed. During fertilization, the genes originating from two sources combine to form a single individual with a different and unique set of genes. And yes, I believe a fetus is a human being although it does not possess a consciousness of itself. The embryo receives cells from the mother and the father. It is a new human life which is genetically distinct and which has energy and a direction of its own from the moment of conception. The natural law puts man and woman together for mutual comfort and the procreation of the human race. The birth of a baby is truly a miracle of love. Offspring inherit genes from their parents. This means that a parent passes on copies of half of his or her genes to each offspring. An offspring's genome then represents a combination of parental genes; The genetic connections through generations continues. The genes of an individual are passed along a chain of offspring, i.e., children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and so on. Through the process of conception the individual's genes are combined at each step with the genes of other individuals. These genetic connections does extend. Occasionally, as proven-historically, races are broken into isolated reproductive communities. This could happen, for example; if some geographic barrier arose (e.g., traveling throughout history, slavery,) that would cause evolve into separate races , and each would become its own isolated bundle of genetic connections which was created because of different races (ie. Hispanics/Latinos/some Islanders, some Asians, Some Africans-Egyptians and some European countries... etc) When we go further back in the evolutionary history, we see a sequence when splitting in two or three or whatever number and giving rise to new "races". Once the genetic ties between two lineages are severed, they are likely to diverge in their looks and habits, as ancestral features are modified independently in each races. So each races will be characterized by a unique set of traits, and races that are more closely related will generally be more similar to one another. Over the course of hundreds of millions of years, the splitting and subsequent divergence of lineages has produced the Tree of Life. So, no, biracial children are not a lighter or darker version of blacks, white, Asians. They are individual races of many blessings. They are their true selves.

I love Halle! Halle did what all adults should be able to do and thats define who she is regardless of what the world thinks. I think a person's life experiences, attitudes and orientations help them to define who they are and if most of these experiencess to lean towards one side of their racial mixture than the other, then that's what they might identify with. I have a cousin who could easily pass for Brook Shield's twin sister, hands down and you wouldn't know she was blk unless she told you. She'll tell you in a minute, "Yeah my mama is wht but I grew up around an blk family, went to a black school, attend a blk church, I live in an all blk community and away from work I mostly interact with blk people, so who or what else can I define myself as but blk?" I think most mixed people who grow up around mostly blk people indentify themselves as blk while those who grow up in all wht or ethnically diverse areas they tend to go the bi-racial route. Halle indentified herself as blk and nobody forced her to do it, so what's the drama? These terms multi-cultural, mixed, bi-racial and the rest of them is nothing but political jargon design to cause more confusion in a society that's already confused. The last time I checked blk was not a color but the essence from whick all colors originate while wht is the abscense of color and everything in between is nothing more than a shade or a tone of blackness, so there have you. This calling Latinos brown, Native Americans red, Asian people yellow was nothing more than a plot by some wht nut to exalt the supremacy of wht people, think of this, he takes a his difference and establishes his difference as the norm or the standard and everything else as a deviation from the standard, aint that nothing? But this is characteristic of the wicked genious of wht supremacy. This foolishness about I'm mixed is crazy, me and my wife had this discussion and I stated that, "my children are not mixed, my children just display a littler shade of their father's blkackness and as their wht mother you have no color, so what shade of blackness did you add to the equation? In truth you cant call our children mixed you have to call them what they are and that's blk until you can present me with some scientific evidence stating other wise. It's so simple you'll miss it if you blink so let me explain it, "there's only black and the various shades of blk (colors as people like to call them) and wht ( the abscence of blackness and it's various shades), now don't argue with me argue with genetics because genetically there's no such thing as colored genes, so what can a person be mixed with if one parent is blk and the other wht (no color)? Lets do some math, 1+0 = 1 agree? So what does blk + no color = ? Black and regardless of the shade of blackness it's still black! The various shades of black (so-called brown, tan, red and yellow) + black = ? Black and it's various shades! Halle or any so-called mixed person who identifies themself as blk, technically is not wrong. She's not denying her mother she's just defining who she is and if her mother can't understand that then she has a problem. I know the color scheme so widely used and accepted is all that most people know but regardless of how long a lie has been accepted and used, it's still a lie! Halle Berry is a beautiful woman of two races appearing as actual to the eyes. Although she has chosen to identify herself as a black woman, biologically she's not. Tell me how is a child born of a White mother and Black father is black or white? That just never made any sense to me. Her mother carries her in her womb and gives birth to her yet she has no right to acknowledge her. She's chosen to identify herself as Black based on how the world identified her or as America identifies her base on The Jim Crow laws? Jim Crow law was the name of the racial caste system which operated primarily, but not exclusively in southern and border states starting in 1876. The law was the reason for segregation of public schools, public places and public transportation, and the segregation of restrooms, restaurants and drinking fountains for whites and blacks. The U.S. military was also segregated. All major societal institutions reflected and supported the oppression of Blacks back then. So I'm assuming base on those who still believe of 1 drop is justifiable--so should the remained laws established in 1904? She is struggling to make her race proud of her. Why? She shouldn't feel obligated to the "black community" about anything. I can only speak for myself, loving who I want to has nothing to do with lack of love for myself or my race. I think it's cruel, and unfair to force a child or anyone to choose a race. It interferes with their self-esteem. You're telling them a part of who they are is not enough. So my son should be consider what? Base on some points of view, because his father is white--he is automatically white? Not while I'm still breathing. I carried him in my womb, and without his father he would not exist. He is both black & white. And he will always be proud of who he is. If one side does not accept a child because he or she is not of one race thats their problem. But it is not advisable to make that child or adult feel obligated to chose a race. Accept them for who they are. Forcing them to chose shows ones true character. "See I love you when the world is against you, so come with me" WOW! It should be "I love you" I don't think anyone ever feel truly good about themselves without accepting the true self. Halle Berry: “I identify as a black woman, but I’ve always had to embrace my mother and the white side of who I am, too. By choosing, I've often [wondered], “Well, would that make her feel like I’m invalidating her by choosing to identify more with the black side of myself?’” I would certainly feel invalidated if my son choses to identify himself as a white man. I am his mother.

Why should the question be asked about Halle Berry. Did anybody ask that question of Tiger Woods when he married Elin Nordegren? My own belief is that going into the future color is irrelevent and the boundaries between black and white will become blurred. We will all end up as mixed race but that doesnt matter because by then we wont realise it.

Just few weds i will write about the Mix. To the White race once you have a drop of a Black blood in you, they identify you as a black person. To the Black race, once you have a drop of a White blood in you, they identify you as a Mix. But to the Mix, they like to Identify their self as a White race. Its when they got rejected from the White race and been welcome to the black race, then they identify their self as a Black race. To my point of view, Those who their father is White, is a White race. Those who their father is Black, is a Black race. Its your Surname that identifys you. Just my five cent.

If at any point in your existence you feel the need to identify yourself to a particular group based on color or ethnicity, then i dare say that this is the true definition of being racist. We are who we are not because of the way we are born but how we choose to look at life and all that it hold as truth, justice and peace. In my eyes we are all products of the ever changing phenomena of nature and made to adapt to its changes,....which from a visual perspective is only skin deep. What lies underneath is 100% the same. The world has its flaws but these flaws are not black or white, they are just flaws....unless you choose to paint them.
